- עִרְטֵל(Parel of עטל; cmp. Arab, ʿaṭal, a. עֲטַר II) to strip, denude. Gen. R. s. 6 מְעַרְטְלוֹ, v. נַרְתֵּק; Koh. R. to I, 5, v. השתק. Hithpa. הִתְערְטֵל, Nithpa. נִתְעַרְטֵל to be stripped; to denude ones self. Gen. R. s. 19 (ref. to עירמם, Gen. 3:7) אפי׳ מצוה … נִתְעַרְטְלוּ הימנה they had stripped themselves even of the merit of obeying the only command given them. (Yalk. Job 913 והיו רגליו מִתְעַרְטְלוֹת his feet were stripped of their skin (by scalding), v., however, עִרְכֵּל.
